Deep cleaning saves lives
While handwashing is a vital weapon in the battle against Covid-19, so is keeping surfaces clean and disinfected. Covid-19 is a droplet spread virus and although it is very unlikely to be airborne, Covid-19 can be found on surfaces. Tests indicate it may hang around on surfaces for up to nine days, depending on the surface type.
Crucially though, Covid-19 can be removed through good, deep cleaning. How we get rid of Covid-19 on surfaces depends on the surface to be cleaned.
In a shared workspace the most vital things to keep clean are those things that people can cough and sneeze on, or that lots of people touch: things such as door and fridge handles, benches, tabletops, handrails, lift buttons, switches, communal printers, toilets etc.
Cleaning and disinfection
A combination of deep cleaning and disinfection is the most effective way of removing the COVID-19 virus. Remember, even an anti-viral disinfectant may not kill the virus if the surface has not been cleaned with a detergent first. Cleaning reduces the soil load on the surface, allowing the disinfectant to do it work and kill viruses.
How do we get rid a virus on surfaces?
For antiviral disinfectants to actually do their job as they should, we need to ensure the microbes we are trying to get rid of sit and stew in the disinfectant: surfaces need about 10 seconds soaking with the disinfectant for it to work.
Often, we just use a cloth to wipe the microbes around rather than allowing the disinfectants to work. This is not effective.
Antiviral disinfectants
When cleaning for coronaviruses, such as Covid-19, you need to use a detergent that can deactivate these enveloped viruses. We sell the type of antiviral disinfectant NZ businesses can use with confidence to keep their workplaces safe.
Our antiviral disinfectants Super V Disinfectnant, Jasol BC2 Disinfectant Sanitiser, Jasol EC2 Sanitiser and Jasol EC1 Cleaner Sanitiser contain quaternary ammonium compounds.
Published scientific literature shows that quaternaries are generally fungicidal, bactericidal, and virucidal against lipophilic (enveloped) viruses, such as Covid-19, and are sold as hospital disinfectants. Unlike chlorine-based products, EC1 Cleaner Sanitiser can also be used safely on all surfaces, such as polished floors, fittings and benches.
Cleaning the right way
When deep cleaning it is good to remember two general principles.
- Top to bottom: start cleaning surfaces higher up and work your way to the floor. This way any particulates or debris fall to the floor, which will be cleaned last.
- Clean to dirty: start by cleaning surfaces and objects that are cleaner and work your way to cleaning dirtier items (eg, toilets).
Steps to remember when using antiviral disinfectants
Use the following steps to clean an environment:
- Close off the affected area before cleaning and disinfection.
- Always wear disposable gloves when cleaning. When finished, place used gloves in a rubbish bin. Clean your hands using soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or where this is not possible, hand sanitiser of with at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol as the active ingredient.
- Clean the surface first using detergent then apply a disinfectant
- Thoroughly clean surfaces using detergent, and if the product instructions say to do so, follow with water.
- Allow the disinfectant to remain on the surface for the period of time required to kill the virus (contact time) as specified by the manufacturer. If no time is specified, leave for 10 minutes.
- Once deep cleaning and disinfection is complete, place disposable cloths, PPE and covers in a plastic rubbish bag, place it inside another rubbish bag (double-bagging) and dispose of the bag in the general waste.
- Cleaning equipment including mop heads and cloths should be laundered using hot water and completely dried before re-use. Cleaning equipment such as buckets should be emptied and cleaned with a new batch of disinfectant and allowed to dry completely before re-use.
We can slow the spread of COVID-19 through deep cleaning and antiviral disinfectants. Let’s break the chain of transmission and save lives.
